The New Windsor Fire and Hose Company No. 1 was established on December 2, 1908, when town leaders and citizens met to form a fire company to serve the growing needs of their community. Originally named the New Windsor Fire Company, the name was quickly changed, and 34 charter members were enrolled. Early equipment included hose reels, a hook and ladder wagon, and a rented shed for storage, with alarms sounded by the Methodist Church bell. In 1911, the town constructed a dedicated firehouse, and the company continued to operate with basic tools and help from neighboring towns until 1948, when a motorized fire engine was purchased. That same year, the company was reorganized, and a fireman’s carnival was introduced to help raise funds—a tradition that still continues.

From that point forward, the department steadily expanded its apparatus, facilities, and services. It joined the Carroll County Fireman’s Association in 1949, built a new firehouse in 1955, added modern engines throughout the decades, and began ambulance service in 1983. Continued community support enabled the construction of a new fire station, dedicated in 2005, and the company became a central hub for the county’s hazardous materials response. In 2025, the department committed to purchasing a new fire engine with an estimated cost to be $1.3 million and a new brush truck, with an estimated cost of $500,000. With over a century of service, the New Windsor Fire and Hose Company No. 1 remains proud of its legacy and committed to answering the call of its community—past, present, and future.
